According to Safe Work Australia -Work-related injury and disease - Key WHS statistics Australia 2018, 38% of all reported injuries were from “body stressing" and 24% were caused by slips, trips and falls.

MANUAL HANDLING AWARENESS COURSE OVERVIEW

Most if not all of us have an element of manual handling in our workplace.  Although the type of activities can vary widely one thing is certain – manual handling is one of the most common causes of injury at work

This same data mentioned above shows that the 3 most common types of workplace injury are:

  • Traumatic joint/ligament and muscle/tendon injury 41%
  • Wounds, lacerations, amputations and internal organ damage 16%
  • Musculoskeletal and tissue damage 16%

While these statistics don't give exact picture, the Victorian state government reports that 28% of injuries to Victorian workers are caused by manual handling.

Persons Conducting a Business or Undertaking (employer) also have an obligation to provide training on WHS matters to their workers.

WHO SHOULD DO THIS TRAINING?

This online Manual Handling Awareness course for employees, contractors and volunteers, covers what types of activity are regarded as manual handling, the causes of injury and how to reduce risks.  It also covers the types of injury that can occur and also the impact of those injuries has on people.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The following learning outcomes will be achieved on completion of this workplace bullying course:

  • Give an overview of manual handling injuries in the workplace
  • Provide an awareness of the impacts of manual handling injuries
  • Provide some tips on how to recognise manual handling hazards and risks
  • Offer some methods to assess and minimise manual handling risks.
  • To provide information on basic human anatomy in relation to manual handling and work postures.
  • Provide advice on correct manual handling techniques.
  • Give guidance on basic stretches that can be performed to decrease the risk of injury in the workplace.
